Marco Polo (15 Sep 1254 to 8 Jan 1324) was a Venetian merchant, explorer and writer who travelled across the entire Asian continent between 1271 and 1295 to exchange his Italian silk with the spices of India and China. He travelled West to East from Venice to Beijing along the northern half of Central Asia and then back along the southern half including South-East Asia, India and the entire Arabian Peninsula. The northern route is therefore known as “The Silk Road” or “Spice Route” because of the achievement of Marco Polo.
